The Valley Air District used to call it "Check Before You Burn," a program that runs from Nov. 1 through the end of February every year, with the goal of reducing dangerous wood smoke in cities and towns across the San Joaquin Valley.

"Now we're at a point in time when it should be, 'Choose Not To Burn,'" said Heather Heinks, a spokeswoman for the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.
